How to Improve Your DSE Speaking (A Simple Plan)

If you’re somewhere in the middle and not sure how to climb, this is for you. The good news: improvement in speaking is unusually reliable when you train it right.

Why you might feel stuck

Most students plateau for one of three reasons: they practise silently (reading, not speaking), they practise randomly (no clear next skill), or they never get specific feedback (so the same habits repeat). Fix those three and progress restarts.

The plan

  • One skill at a time. Don’t try to fix everything. Work a single move — say, answering in your first sentence — until it’s automatic, then move on. This is the belt-ladder idea: one signature move per stage.
  • Daily, short, out loud. Ten to fifteen minutes of real speaking a day beats a weekend cram. Consistency compounds.
  • Feedback that’s specific. After each attempt, name two things that worked and one thing to change — a coach’s draft anchored to the four assessment domains, not a vague “that was good.”
  • Rehearse the real format. Practise Part A and Part B in their actual shape so the exam holds no surprises.
  • Track the climb. Keep your recordings; hearing last month’s answer next to today’s is the motivation that keeps you going.

A realistic timeline

There’s no magic number, but students who speak daily and get honest feedback usually feel a clear difference within a few weeks. It’s mastery-based, not calendar-based — you move when the skill is solid.
